Dan Bates is the Chief Executive of Sheffield Theatres Trust, the UK’s largest regional theatre complex, with 2,500 seats across three theatres, producing extraordinary theatre in Sheffield, across the UK, in London and New York.
After his formal training at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, he worked at the Theatre Royal in Windsor, Riding Lights Theatre in York and the West Yorkshire Playhouse in Leeds. He became Chief Executive at York Theatre Royal in 2004 and joined Sheffield Theatres in 2009.
Alongside his work at Sheffield Theatres, Dan is a Board member of Welcome to Yorkshire, English Touring Theatre and the Sheffield BID Company. He also sits on the Sheffield Cultural Consortium and the task and finish group for Create Sheffield, as well as the developing Cultural Education Partnership.
Sheffield Theatres has a reputation for producing outstanding new work, with recent hits including Standing at the Sky’s Edge, with music and lyrics by Mercury Prize nominated Richard Hawley, and a dazzling new adaptation of Yann Martel’s multi-million selling Life of Pi by Lolita Chakrabarti. The show will open at the Wyndham’s Theatre in London, joining our production of Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, which continues to run at the Apollo Theatre.
